More Hands on Deck: The Haitian Project’s (THP) Board of Directors convened in Providence, RI for their Annual Meeting on June 7th. The Board added David Finn [CT], Elizabeth Gilges [NY], Scott LeGrand [IL], Adam Osielski [DC], and Smith Vioselin [MA]. Patrick Brun [Haiti], former Chair, was also reelected after a hiatus. The six new members bring many unique gifts as well as a common belief in THP’s mission. The Annual Meeting also included a public presentation of THP’s 2013-2018 Strategic Plan, and an introduction of the Rise, Let Us Be on Our Way capital campaign (see pg. 2).

Heavy Reading: Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) School in Farmington, MI set a record with their annual Read-A-Thon to benefit THP this March. Parent coordinator for the event, Colleen Vento, was amazed by the generosity of the OLS community. She credits the students: “This is their school, it’s their project.” This year, the National Junior Honors Society built momentum by promoting the event in classes and at lunches. The Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council #4401 and the Parent-Teacher Guild once again supported event costs to maximize the benefit to THP.

PC Visits LCS:  Fr. James Cuddy, O.P., Chaplain of Providence College (PC) and THP Board Member, and PC Assistant Basketball Coach, Bob Simon, led a group of eight students on a visit to Louverture Cleary School (LCS) in May. After months of preparation, the group visited LCS to gain a deeper understanding of THP’s mission and charism of work for the betterment of others, and to participate in the work of LCS. Speaking of the campus atmosphere, Coach Simon, a first-time visitor, noted, “From sun up till sun down, there is inspired activity and education. There are specific goals and direction.”
