Principal Marjorie Mombrun teaches religion to Senkyem (8th grade) students.
During her years as a student at The Haitian Project’s (THP) Louverture Cleary School (LCS), Marjorie Mombrun (class of 2007) received years of leadership training and mentorship from the staff and Volunteers. Six years later, her quiet determination to serve is still hard at work for the THP community – now as the Principal of LCS.
Mombrun’s time as an LCS student and simple observation of her society, showed her just how important education is for the future of Haiti. “Education is the only thing that will bring true, positive change to Haiti. If our people are educated, we can build a country of people who are invested in its future, who believe that they can achieve their dreams and know how to do it.” This belief led Mombrun to pursue a degree in educational sciences at the Institut Universitaire des Sciences de l’Éducation in Haiti upon graduation from LCS.
Thanks to LCS’s junior staff program, Mombrun worked her way through university while teaching religion to Senkyem (8th grade) students, serving as campus minister, leading sacrament preparation for LCS students, and helping out in the academic offices. After completing her university studies, Mombrun served in the office of Academic Dean before transitioning into her current role.
Though Mombrun is quick to point out that she did not expect to find her work in education to bring her back to LCS, in hindsight her service as a junior staff prepared her well for the position she holds today. Deacon Patrick Moynihan, President of THP and Head of LCS, commented, “I am very proud that Marjorie has moved into this important position of leadership. She is well suited to the position given her excellent performance as Dean of Academics and her love for LCS.”
Esther Paul, THP Director of Operations –Haiti, not only enjoys working with Mombrun, but also appreciates the significance of having an alumna fill the post of principal. “At LCS, our goal is to change Haiti and, from my point of view, educating women is the first step. The second step is to give those women the opportunity to use their capacity, their potential, and their intelligence to impact people around them. Marjorie’s appointment sends a clear message, saying that another Haiti is possible.”
Over the past nine years, Mombrun’s impact on hundreds of Louverturians has been immeasurable. Her appreciation for the value of education leads her to take her responsibilities to the students very seriously. Mombrun looks forward to forming future Louverturians who will further THP’s mission to build a better future for Haiti.
