Volunteer Kristin Soukup helps Philo (senior +1) student Laguerre Lochard study economics.

I am Lochard J. Laguerre, a Philo (senior plus one) student at Louverture Cleary School (LCS).  I live in Pétionville in Port au Prince.  I first came to LCS for a specific reason: to learn English and Spanish.  During my first year, I realized a new reason, which is to help rebuild Haiti.  Before I came to Louverture Cleary I thought Haiti couldn’t change, but now I know that it’s possible if we work hard for it.

At LCS I am involved with three programs: I interpret at a clinic between English and Spanish and Kreyòl; I teach children from the neighborhood subjects like Math, French, and religion in the Koukouy Sen Kler program and every Friday, I go to the nearby Children of Haiti Project with two other students to teach English to the students there.  By participating in these programs, I am giving for free what I have received for free at LCS.

My plan for the future is to participate in the rebuilding of Haiti.  I am very interested in medicine; it has been my dream to become a doctor, so I used to participate in the LCS medical club.  This year I’m realizing that I should focus my energy on improving health care systems in Haiti.  There are a lot of people who can’t have access to medical care in Haiti because most of the time the systems in the hospitals don’t work.  After I study medicine, I would like to work in hospital administration.  I hope my behavior will be an example to others to work hard, to make sure that the system is working correctly.
