Highlights June 2007
Builders of Hope
In a country with an 80% unemployment rate, LCS graduates are plunging forward in colleges, universities and in the work place; each adding their own bricks to rebuild Haiti. In 2007, 8 out of 10 of our alumni are now serving as managers, teachers and business representatives, or are continuing their professional studies. The remaining 20% of these graduates are in pursuit of other opportunities. Among the LCS alumni currently in university, 15 are studying medicine. The current average cost for grads to attend university in Haiti ranges from $1,000 to $3,000 US per year. The [Irish] Haitian Project?!
A Celtic storm is brewing at THP as Mike Gallagher and Mary Jo Dunne join the Development team in Rockford. Gallagher joined THP this March as Director of Development. For 26 years, Gallagher worked for Swedish American Health System in Rockford, most recently as Corporate Vice President of Business Development. Mary Jo Dunne first visited LCS on the 2003 Loras College mission trip, which inspired her to become an LCS volunteer teacher. This past school year, she led the Religion Department and headed up Campus Ministry. Dunne will replace Elizabeth O’Connell as Director of Community Development in June. THP is pleased to have this new dynamic, Irish duo working in Rockford.
Loving Hearts for Haiti
St. Joseph Catholic Church, in South Bend, IN, offered their “Loving Hearts for Haiti” this spring during their Lenten alms-giving. This community, home of 700 families, 450 school children, and THP volunteer teacher Gena Robinson, offered their community prayers and collected $9,175.14 to support the students of LCS!! THP is encouraged to see how God continues to provide for Louverture Cleary School through the guidance and movement of the Spirit in so many communities. With the support of the many parishes that see and understand the vision for LCS, THP can continue to provide Catholic education and formation for its students – students who use their talents to rebuild their country each day.
