On April 8th, 2008, the THP Board voted to establish a scholarship in Ace and Audrey Mullen’s names. A veteran volunteer, THP Board member, Academic Committee member (including serving as Committee Chair) and loving spirit, Ace was a tremendous asset to The Project and friend to all in our community for over a decade.

Shortly after the decision to establish the scholarship was made, the benevolent man from Chesapeake, Virginia passed away. “Ace touched a lot of people,” said Patrick Moynihan. “We can see by the response from those who have donated to the scholarship.”

Once the corpus reaches $100,000, the revenue from the Ace and Audrey Mullen Scholarship will support LCS graduates going to university with special emphasis on those students studying engineering and science.

THP Providence Office Manager Colby Bowker oversees the donations coming in for the scholarship and said, “We’ve seen a great response from the Chesapeake community and from Ace’s Family. Mary Revell, Ace’s daughter, has been particularly helpful in directing support our way. We’re confident that in our drive to build this endowment, people will follow the example of Ace and realize the importance of supporting our fellow neighbors in the Americas by helping to provide opportunities to our graduates.”

“The wonderful thing about Ace is that everyone has a story demonstrating his commitment to the Project,” said THP Development Committee Chair Kevin Schuyler. “I remember when he was passing through Maryland and had stopped at my house. He was carrying a number of used pumps which he intended to send down to the school. The pumps were not real clean. Ace wanted to be sure they had been cleaned before we sent them to Haiti. I can still picture him in my mind spraying down the pumps in my front yard before packing them up for one of his many trips to Haiti.”

“I’ll do what I can,” was always Ace’s response when asked to help. With that simple approach, he was able to wire most of the major buildings on campus with electricity, repair dozens of lights and fans, help set up the power utilization survey for the solar program, and set up the science lab that stands on the northwest side of campus.

If you or someone you know would like to donate to the Ace and Audrey Mullen Scholarship, please do so by writing “Ace and Audrey Mullen Scholarship” on the memo line of the check made payable to ‘The Haitian Project’ and send to us at: The Haitian Project, PO Box 6891, Providence RI 02940.
