A Gift of Technology

Thanks to the help and expertise of former Louverture Cleary staff member Bill Newton, LCS once again has a fully operational student computer lab. In late May, Bill traveled from Illinois and spent a week at our school refurbishing the lab and restoring it to its former glory and beyond. Students now have access to 18 computers, fully loaded with educational software to help propel them into future careers.

Younger students are now able to work on their computer literacy---learning the basics of navigating a computer and improving their typing proficiency. Older students are gaining competency in word processors, creating and formatting documents such as résumés that will be very important in their lives after graduation.

Bill Newton best described the excitement of our students when he said, “It’s truly humbling to have experienced a week of the young Sizyem students gathering up all their courage and pride in their English proficiency to tell me, a complete stranger, just how much they appreciate the computers and all of the work I was doing to make them function. I often feel quite guilty about being the visible part of what is truly the entire Haitian Project community. I try to explain to them just how many people's combined efforts, prayers and donations went into the new system. I hope they understand, and I hope the LCS community understands just how much they appreciate it.”

I am thankful both to Bill Newton for his services and to Food For The Poor, which donated the CPU components needed to complete our new system. Amidst the chaos inflicted by the quake, it’s great to have recaptured such an important aspect of our academic program.

I am also recently thankful to my brother Brian’s willingness to gain some public awareness for the project.
