The summer quiet of the past few weeks at Louverture Cleary School was broken Monday morning at 7:00 AM. Parents and returning students filled our street, Santo 5, waiting for the school to open at 8:00 AM. It was a welcome cacophony of noise. Finally comfortable with their new home, the Volunteers who have been her for a month had begun to wonder when it was going to start.
And start it did. By 9:00 AM the school was "a buzz" with a full house of students finding where they will sleep for the year, putting away their belongings, and reconnecting with friends. By 10:00 AM, every student was involved in the general school cleaning process. Like clockwork, lunch was on time. By the afternoon, things were moving so smoothly it seemed as though we had never stopped. I am sure this is one of the smoother, if not smoothest, opening days of the new school year. Esther Paul, LCS Director of Operations, and Marjorie Mombrun, Dean of Academics, did a wonderful job getting us ready. I owe them a lot for their dogged commitment to getting us off to a great start!
I have had the pleasure of seeing our school open a dozen times. So, I thought it might be good to hear what it was like for fresh eyes. Below are some comments from our Volunteers:
"It was great to see the LCS community in action during netwayaj [clean up time] and the morning meeting."- Jessica Teater
"It is really inspiring to see, as a second year Volunteer, how the staff, Volunteers, and students cycle through the school but our mission at LCS stays the same."- Amanda Gaal
"We've been waiting for 4 weeks for the students to arrive...now we can really get to work!" – Katie Guzik
